Lego Star Wars 40407 Death Star II Battle Review

Today we take a look at Lego Star Wars 40407 Death Star II Battle. This set was a Gift With Purchase (GWP) with a minimum spend at Lego shops and at Lego Shop@home for the May 4th Lego Star Wars promotion. The set itself features the exterior armoured surface of the Death Star II, with gun turrets and scaffolding, with an additional build of a mini scale A-Wing Starfighter and a TIE Interceptor.

Main build:

The main build itself is the actual Death Star II, whilst this set doesn't exactly scream Death Star as it is only a small section of its armoured hull, but at this scale the set itself does enough justice to make it an interesting build with many SNOT (Studs Not On Top) technique to create this smooth surfaces. The design also includes slopped pieces, and a range of Lego pieces to create vent exhaust ports and other detailing to capture the metallic construct that is the Death Star II.

The set also has three structures under construction which are cleverly built using red grill pieces which capture the look of the towers under construction that we seen in Star Wars Episode 6: Return of the Jedi which add height to the overall build. There is also a well built gun tower build as well which looks fantastic and adds some depth to the build.

A-Wing Build:

The first mini build of the set is the micro scale A-Wing. Overall it is a nice iteration of the classic A-Wing Starfighter (which is getting a lot of attention in recent years in the Lego community). The mini build captures the vehicle well and you can clearly tell its a A-Wing. The build connects to the overall build using a single clip piece allowing you to slightly position the vehicle on the build.

TIE Interceptor Build:

The second part of the build is a TIE Interceptor. The build looks great and is instantly recognisable as a TIE Interceptor. The wings are attached using clip pieces. The centre section does seem a bit too long and the build seems slightly too big compared to the A-Wing, but it does look good on display.

Verdict:

Overall it is a solid build and looks good with the other micro builds of the battle of Hoth and the battle of Endor and has some great overall detailing. I know a lot of people were disappointed that the May 4th promotional didn't include a exclusive minfigure and were disappointed when this set was announced but for what it is, it is a solid build and looks good on display.

Even though the set has a relative fair price in the US and Canada the second hand market has sky rocketed as Lego fans from all over the world try to get the hands on the set with prices now in the range of £120 + and rising.  Minifigures:  Luke Skywalker:  The first minifigure is Luke Skywalker in his Star Wars Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back outfit. The minifigure features a highly detailed torso and leg print which closely matches its appearance in the film. The tan hair piece also looks great but I particularly love the face ...
