Lego Star Wars 75294 Bespin Duel Review

Set Number: 75294
Theme: Star Wars
Price: $39.99
Pieces: 295 pieces
Minifigures: 2 - Darth Vader & Luke Skywalker

Today we are taking a look at the Lego Star Wars 75294 Bespin Duel set. The set itself was meant to be released as an exclusive set from Star Wars Celebration but due to the cancellation of the event due to the global pandemic Lego decided to release this set as an exclusive set in the US and Canada retailing at $39.99. Even though the set has a relative fair price in the US and Canada the second hand market has sky rocketed as Lego fans from all over the world try to get the hands on the set with prices now in the range of £120 + and rising.

Minifigures:

Luke Skywalker:

The first minifigure is Luke Skywalker in his Star Wars Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back outfit. The minifigure features a highly detailed torso and leg print which closely matches its appearance in the film. The tan hair piece also looks great but I particularly love the face print one side showing a calmer look and the second (as seen in the image above) has his bruised appearance seen during the conflict on Bespin. The minifigure does come with Luke's blue lightsaber.

Darth Vader:

The second minifigure is of course Darth Vader. This version is very similar to previous version of the character but with one major difference the minifigure finally has some arm printing which looks fantastic and adds that extra level of detail to the minifigure and it is hard to imagine how they can really improve this minifigure. The minifigure also has some great detailing on the torso and legs, a two piece removable helmet and of course Darth Vader's red Sith lightsaber.

Bespin Duel:

The main part of the set is of course a brick built platform from Episode 5 which created one of the most famous scenes not just in Star Wars history but also in the history of film as well. The set is extremely well built and features a ton of detailing to really help capture the scene perfectly in brick built form. The platform sits on a black display base, also creating the void below the platform and a 40 anniversary sticker for Star Wars Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back.

The first section of the build is the main platform from which Darth Vader delivers his most famous line. There is some excellent detailing all around the platform with tube pipes uses to create a railing with attached lights to create some shape to the platform. There is some more railings towards the end of the set which cleverly uses some microphone pieces to add some detailing to the rails.

There is also a good use of grill pieces which adds some extra detailing to the small stairs leading up tot the platform area which look great from a side view but also from above as well.

Before we get to the main antenna area we have a small build of a damaged antenna which resembles the small shot where Darth Vader slices through the antenna with his lightsaber. The three black single studs show of the scorched antenna which is a great addition.

Just around the other side of the platform there are two clips which allow you to attach the two lightsabers you get in the set to the actual build which is a great storage solution if you don't want your minifigures displayed with there lightsabers.

The other substantial part of the build consists of the two antennas which are connected to the platform using a selection of plates. A lot of circular plates and cone pieces are used to create the antennas made famous from The Empire Strikes Back. I am extremely impressed with the way this turned out and looks fantastic on display. You can of course attach Luke to the bottom of the antenna as seen more clearly in the image below.

The entire build sits of two clear translucent pillars which are connected to a black tiled base which creates a really nice polished display piece but also adds to the illusion of the void below the platform. The set of course comes with a 40th anniversary sticker for The Empire Strikes Back which looks great but I would of preferred a printed tile instead.

Overall the Lego Star Wars 75294 Bespin Duel is a fantastic display piece and recreated the iconic scene perfectly in brick built form. The level of detailing is great for a set that has just under 300 pieces in it. I just wish this set was more widely available for more Lego fans to enjoy rather than having to pay the extremely high second market prices for this set.
